Perceptions of aging can and in actuality do influence societal behaviors and expectations towards older people. Here is a collection of PDFs we have used in doing research for our monthly newsletter. Please note copyrights.

HOUSING AS THE LINCHPIN OF WELL-BEING

HARVARD  Joint Center for Housing Studies and the AARP Foundation

“Affordable, accessible, and well-located housing is central to quality of life for people of all ages, but especially for older adults (defined here as 50 and over). As the single largest item in most household budgets, housing costs directly affect day-to-day financial security as well as the ability to accrue wealth to draw upon later in life. Accessibility is essential to older adults’ health and safety as physical and cognitive limitations increase. Proximity of housing to stores, services, and transportation enables older adults to remain active and productive members of their communities, meet their own basic needs, and maintain social connections. And for those with chronic conditions and disabilities, the availability of housing with  supports and services determines the quality and cost of long-term care—particularly the portion paid with public funds.”

INTERVIEW AND QUESTIONNAIRE

NATIONAL SOCIAL HEALTH AND AGING PROJECT

The National Health, Social Life and Aging Project (NSHAP) is supported by the National Institutes of Health, including the National Institute on Aging, the Office of Women's Health Research, the Office of AIDS Research, and the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (5R01AG021487). NSHAP is also supported by theNational Opinion Research Center, whose staff is responsible for the data collection.

INTER CULTURAL DIFFERENCES

PERCEPTIONS OF AGING

Aging, stereotypes, crosscultural, values- Perceptions of aging influence societal behaviors and expectations towards older people (e.g.,Pasupathi &Löckenhoff, 2002) as well as older adults’ wellbeing and coping with the aging process (e.g.Levy, 2003; Levy & Myers, 2004). The majority of studies in this field have focused on individual differences in perceptions of aging within (mostly Western) cultures, but there is growing evidence that views of aging may differ across cultures as well (e.g.,Arnhoff, Leon, & Lorge, 1964;Giles et al., 2000).

The present study extends previous research by comparing multiple aspects of aging perceptions across 26 cultures and examining their culture level associates. To provide the background for this work, we review previous research on intercultural differences in perceptions of aging and discuss theoretical perspectives on the causes of such differences.

BABY BOOMERS RIDING THE WAVE OF DIVERSITY

Symphony IRI Group,Inc.

The two generations studied in this report, the silent generation and baby boomers, are remarkable in different ways. The silent generation, those born between 1925 and 1945,fought in three wars: World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.Their parents suffered through the Great Depression, when for many, simply putting food on the table each day was a victory. These experiences shaped the silent generation. Frugality and a focus on home life were deeply etched into their consciousness.

HOW LEADERS KILL MEANING AT WORK

 A McKinsey Report

Senior executives routinely undermine creativity, productivity, and commitment by damaging the inner work lives of their employees in four avoidable ways.People are more creative, productive, committed, and collegial in their jobs when they have positive inner work lives. But it’s not just any sort of progress in work that matters. The first, and fundamental, requirement is that the work be meaningful to the people doing it.

LIVABLE COMMUNITIES- FOR ALL AGES

Older adults want to stay in their homes.Communities can help older adults age in place. “Universal design” is the practice of making minor changes to the design of a home that can have a major impact on its livability.  Universally adapted homes appeal to home buyers of all ages who may, for example, have a temporary disability or have older family members living with them...."
